Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD) Q & A
What is an STD?
Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are diseases caused by infections which are passed from one person to another during sexual contact or intercourse. These infections are often symptomless, or symptoms may not manifest for months or years after the disease was contracted. Medically, infections are only referred to as diseases when they cause symptoms.
STDs are also sometimes referred to as sexually transmitted infections, or STIs. This is because medically, infections are only called diseases when they cause symptoms. However, in common vernacular the terms STD and STI are interchangeable, even if no symptoms are present. Many types of STD can be effectively treated however some can cause very serious complications or even be fatal if left untreated.
What Types of STDs are there?
STDs are disturbingly common. Over 50% of the United States population will contract an STD at least once during the course of their lives. There are several types of sexually transmitted diseases and infections including:
- Chlamydia
- Genital Warts
- Gonorrhea
- Hepatitis B
- Herpes
- HIV & AIDS
- Human Papillomavirus (HPV)
- Molluscum Contagiosum
- Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID)
- Pubic Lice (Crabs)
- Scabies
- Syphilis
- Trichomoniasis
Can STDs Be Prevented? What Type of Treatments Are There?
A person can reduce the risk of contracting an STD by engaging in safe sexual behaviors. If a person finds themselves in a situation where he or she might have put him or herself at risk, Dr. Murtuza offers discreet testing at his office. Testing can reveal any infection and allow a patient to receive the appropriate treatment quickly, reducing their risk of further damage to their health or spreading it to other people. Treatments usually involve medication, typically an antibiotic. However, some of the sexually transmitted diseases, like herpes, do not have a cure and the best and only way to avoid symptoms is to avoid obtaining it in the first place.
